Your budget will determine how ornate your staircase will be. You should determine a rough budget before you go looking to see what is available. Remember that if you are interested in a custom staircase which has hand crafted elements you will end up paying much more than machine carved accents may be. You will also find that models which are curved may be more expensive because it is more labor intensive to produce them because they may need to me shaped or curved by hand and may take longer to make.
Cloakroom. If you're tired of having to pick your way over discarded bags and coats in the hallway when you get home, think about converting the area under your staircase into a cloakroom. Even if there's only a shallow nook, it's usually sufficient for a few cubby holes with hooks for hats, umbrellas and coats. Try adding some wicker baskets underneath for small items such as scarves, gloves and key rings - you'll find it so much easier to keep everything tidy. If the whole area under the stairs is accessible, consider turning it into a clothes cupboard. Just fit some shelves and hanging rails round the edge to provide useful storage for seasonal clothing, and free up space in your bedroom wardrobe at the same time. This is also a great place to store boots, trainers, gym kits, golf clubs, tennis racquets and ski equipment.
Before you start, prepare for dust and disruption and remember that, unless you have a second staircase, you won't be able to access the upper levels while work is going on. A standard, straight staircase kit can cost as little as £250, but bespoke designs start at around £3,000. This could rise to £25,000 plus for a bespoke one with real wow factor. Issues such as access can up the final figure further (installing a staircase on the sixth floor will be more pricey than on lower levels, for example).
