This is where you need not go minimalistic at all. Get a large TV screen, the larger the better, not so large that it grabs all the attention though. There is nothing like enjoying a sports match or watching a movie with friends and family on your television screen in your living room. Make sure the screen is placed at n appropriate distance from the seating furniture; it should be neither too near nor too far. Do not let your imagination go wild and keep the wall simple on which the TV screen is mounted.
By now you may have got a hint of where I'm heading with all this! The fact is that hard surfaces are bad news for good sound. The restaurant example above illustrates perfectly how sound is bounced around off hard surfaces, creating unappealing volume and resonance. Extrapolate this to our picture of the 'ideal' living room so often depicted in glossy magazines and we can see that this minimalistic look, with lots of hard surfaces, will not seem quite so desirable once the surround sound is switched on!
The first step in planning a minimalist living room is defining how you intend to use the room. Is it purely a sitting room to receive guests, or does it double to become the family den and entertainment room? When you know what activities takes place in a room, then you can plan the furniture for the equipment that will be housed in that room.
