The minimalist look is deceptive and tricky - it may seem like it is a simple thing to do because it requires less pieces and more clean lines. But pulling it off is actually tricky because your goal is not to make the living room look bare - this is not really what being minimalist is about. The best thing to do to pull off the minimalist look is to get a few statement furniture pieces and arrange them in your living room. Keep your colors solid - never go for patterns. Choose shades that are neutral and basic. Also, your wall colors should be in the ranges of whites, beiges, or solid blacks and grays.
The modern living room in contemporary homes serves as the nerve center of most activities of the family. This is the area of the home where the family gathers for relaxation, or where visitors are welcomed and entertained, and where we hang out with relatives, neighbors or friends who are visiting from somewhere else. This is also where we enjoy our favorite music, movies or television shows. If we think about it, in most homes today the living room would probably be considered as the actual dining area instead of the dining room as dinners are often eaten in front of the TV anyway.
When purchasing desks, shelves and items that can double as storage areas, look to go vertical instead of horizontal. Stacking small pieces on top of one another will bring the focus of the room toward the wall while creating substantial storage areas that have a minimal impact on the overall square-footage.
