Shape: The rule of thumb is that if you have a square shaped room, a square dining table may be a good idea and if your dining area is rectangular in shape, the more conventional rectangular one will be a good bet. Also a very good option is the circular or round dining room table. This is the shape to go for when the proportions of your dining area are small and space is a constraint. Round dining tables are great space savers. Also consider the number of chairs that you want for the dining room: if all you need are 4 chairs it does not make sense to choose a rectangular table, because 4 chairs placed at a rectangular table can look pretty odd.
Step one would be to start with a bare room and just the walls. Keep the colors neutral and light, a good shade of white will do. The point is to stay away from bright colors, the same goes for built in furniture. if you're planning on having a sideboard or some built in cabinets, keep them in one color. The best quality for these sorts of furniture's would be something wooden, so stick to the same shade of brown for all your furniture.
Another change that came about was locating the dining room adjacent to the kitchen. This is contrast to the Middle Ages when the kitchen was generally on a different floor to the eating area. As affluence increased so the number of homes increased such that more people cooked and entertained in their own homes and needed to be able to serve food quickly, conveniently and safely (without climbing up stairs!).
