By now you may have got a hint of where I'm heading with all this! The fact is that hard surfaces are bad news for good sound. The restaurant example above illustrates perfectly how sound is bounced around off hard surfaces, creating unappealing volume and resonance. Extrapolate this to our picture of the 'ideal' living room so often depicted in glossy magazines and we can see that this minimalistic look, with lots of hard surfaces, will not seem quite so desirable once the surround sound is switched on!
A minimalist living room creates a relaxing atmosphere for the entire family to enjoy and unwind. Do you notice how a clutter free room instantly brings our stress levels down? Or the opposite - how easily we get worked up when we are surrounded by too many things... especially things that we don't really need at the moment?
The modern living room in contemporary homes serves as the nerve center of most activities of the family. This is the area of the home where the family gathers for relaxation, or where visitors are welcomed and entertained, and where we hang out with relatives, neighbors or friends who are visiting from somewhere else. This is also where we enjoy our favorite music, movies or television shows. If we think about it, in most homes today the living room would probably be considered as the actual dining area instead of the dining room as dinners are often eaten in front of the TV anyway.
