I have always believed that your living room reflects your personality and hence needs to be given utmost priority while designing it. With the right kind of furniture, you can provide an ideal living space. Your personal taste and preferences should reveal itself in your home decor and add surreal beauty to the whole ambience. Quaint yet stylish, contemporary with a touch of antiquity and bold yet subtle is my kind of ideal living room setting.
Luckily, furniture makers and home decor stores have had a few decades to adapt their products to fit smaller living spaces. Gone are the days of grandiose bureaus and large dressers that take up more room than a car parked in a garage. Much of today's furniture is built with a minimalist approach of space saving and multi-usage.
Firstly, if you have hard flooring in your living room this is generally bad news for sound! However by placing a large fluffy rug about half-way between the front speakers of your system, and your seating positions, you are providing an 'absorption mat' thus giving a cleaner quality to any sound that is projected downwards from your speakers. A subwoofer (bass speaker) should not be placed on a hard floor as it can cause booming which will overwhelm the subtlety of the bass notes, so if you have hard flooring then try positioning it on a piece of carpet.
