Staircase Understairs. Wednesday , October 17th , 2018 - 20:21:51 PM
The simplest type of staircase - a straight staircase supported at the top against a wall - is the easiest to open up because the timbers under the stair serve only to support the paneling. A straight staircase between two side walls (with access to the space from an adjoining room) is the most difficult to open up as both walls are likely to be load bearing. In this situation you need professional advice and help, and perhaps a building permit, before you can remove the walls.
Before you start, prepare for dust and disruption and remember that, unless you have a second staircase, you won't be able to access the upper levels while work is going on. A standard, straight staircase kit can cost as little as £250, but bespoke designs start at around £3,000. This could rise to £25,000 plus for a bespoke one with real wow factor. Issues such as access can up the final figure further (installing a staircase on the sixth floor will be more pricey than on lower levels, for example).
Whether it is staircases from a budget kit that, put together, forms a contemporary spiral from as little as 100cm to as much as 800cm or straight and winding stairs that incorporates conventional with contemporary styling, home space saving staircases are now available to fit the bill. Apart from the timeless elegance of wood, they are now being manufactured in aluminum, glass, or steel - with either open or closed treads. In fact, lack of space no longer precludes a contemporary design being fitted as home space saving staircases have now come into their own.
