Madalynn May. Staircase Understairs. September 25th , 2018.
Your staircase is an important element of your home's architectural design. A curved staircase will combine structural integrity with luxury, and can transform the focal point of your home. There are various options for curved staircases that you can choose from, including the more gently curved splayed. Whilst a splayed design is more understated compared to a fully curved staircase, the elegance of the design still makes a powerful statement. Either one or both strings of a staircase can be splayed, depending upon your individual preference.
Cloakroom. If you're tired of having to pick your way over discarded bags and coats in the hallway when you get home, think about converting the area under your staircase into a cloakroom. Even if there's only a shallow nook, it's usually sufficient for a few cubby holes with hooks for hats, umbrellas and coats. Try adding some wicker baskets underneath for small items such as scarves, gloves and key rings - you'll find it so much easier to keep everything tidy. If the whole area under the stairs is accessible, consider turning it into a clothes cupboard. Just fit some shelves and hanging rails round the edge to provide useful storage for seasonal clothing, and free up space in your bedroom wardrobe at the same time. This is also a great place to store boots, trainers, gym kits, golf clubs, tennis racquets and ski equipment.
'The majority of bathroom brochures show spaces the size of a ballroom,' says Robin Levien of Ideal Standard. 'In reality, the average bathroom in the UK is around the size of a king-size bed, so it's essential to make the most of every inch.' Compact ceramics ranges can be a real boon. 'Basins that are wider than they are deep can solve all kinds of problems,' continues Robin. 'And a corner toilet cistern can allow you to have a mini en-suite in the corner of a bedroom, with a shower, basin and toilet all in the space of a regular corner bath. Or choose a compact tub, which can free up room for something else.' Check out the Space and Concept ranges by Ideal Standard.
